Hey my friends! Today I am going to be talking about Magic! Eeeek! I am really into magic at the moment but on a chill level. I own two precons and I hope to get another this year. Precons are already built decks that you can buy and player straight out of the box. See below my collection and my next buy:
Commander Pre-con Decks
Fae Dominion
This is my first deck and I love it so much! The design of the cards are so pretty plus the commander is pretty good. I also like how the deck plays too. Its all about giving faeries plus ones and of course countering; which a lot of people hate lol.
Legends Legacy
This one is very powerful for a commander deck. The abilities on the commander just make it hard to beat against any other commander deck. Its mainly big creatures and giving abilities to other creatures.
Next buy!! : Guided by Nature
This is my next purchase! I love the theme of the deck and how it centres around giving plus ones and lots of green mana. Green decks are for mana ramp and this deck does it well.
Basic guide: What is magic?
Magic the Gathering is a trading card game consisting of different formats. Do not look to me for knowledge on the details of the game but I know the basics (I think?). I only play commander with consists of a deck of 100 cards including your commander; consider them the leader of the deck and what you base the rest of your cards on. You start with 40 life and commander is usually 4 player but you can adjust the format for 2 and 3 player games. You basically use mana which are called land on the board to play the rest of your cards, these include: creatures, sorceries, instants, artifacts, enchantments and planeswalkers. These all have different abilities and their are hundreds of versions of these cards that fit different play styles and deck themes. There are different levels to the magic system 1-5, 5 being competitor level where you can win after like turn two.
There are 5 colours which are the mana to get the rest of your cards out. Different cards have different colour mana and some have colour combos. The main play style for each colour is:
1. White: Order and Protection
- Ideal Playstyle: If you enjoy building a strong defence, creating an organized battlefield, and winning through attrition or overwhelming numbers, White is likely your best match.
2. Blue: Knowledge and Manipulation
- Ideal Playstyle: If you enjoy outmanoeuvring your opponent, controlling the game, and winning through incremental advantage or decking out your opponent, Blue is your colour.
3. Black: Ambition and Sacrifice
- Ideal Playstyle: If you’re drawn to a ruthless, calculated approach where you can control the game’s pace and are willing to make sacrifices for power, Black will suit you well.
4. Red: Freedom and Chaos
- Ideal Playstyle: If you love fast, aggressive gameplay, enjoy dealing direct damage, and aren’t afraid of taking risks, Red is the colour for you.
5. Green: Growth and Instinct
- Ideal Playstyle: If you prefer a straightforward, powerful approach where you can outmuscle your opponent with big creatures and overwhelming force, Green is your go-to colour.
Without getting too complex, there are many keyword actions in magic that allow cards to do certain things. I would suggest a cheat sheet or just playing again and again like I did to get to grips with it all! There is probably still words I have not come across.
Most people will move to building their own decks once they are familiar with the game and their play style. I actually find I am into different decks and I like playing a variety of styles. I find myself drawn to the design of the cards more than the abilities. Although, I do favour chaotic cards sometimes with cool abilities. I feel overall theme is important to me.
Pre-cons vs built decks
Pre-cons are amazing for beginners but I even still enjoy playing them. Most of them are built to the advantage and abilities of the commander(as they should be). They also give you ideas for your own decks and may inspire a theme of style you like.
Building a deck is starting from 0. You build your deck using the deck build structure, around whatever idea you have. They are a lot more complex and depending on the level, can be savage to play against! I usually stick to level 2 or 3. I love the fun of the game, I am not into totally destroying my opponents.
How to go about building a deck
You start with picking the commander you wanted based on the idea you have for the theme or type of play you want to try. You then use this to build the rest of your deck. It is always wise to have 30-36 lands, these allow you to actually play the rest of your cards. Too little of these and you can be stuck without a defence for a while, leading to your destruction!
You will want to balance out the rest of your cards amongst the main card types: instants, sorceries, artifacts, enchantments. This will depend on the type of deck you want. Creatures usually are about 25 but for example, aggro decks may have more as they win through lots of big stuff and lots of damage! Then you can add others and tweak until your happy with it :D
My top tips
- Do not feel the pressure when playing! Find players who are happy to teach and play with you knowing your new.
- Don't be afraid to try different decks. Most people have a playstyle but if you just enjoy it causally like me, that's cool!
- Use websites like EDH to built decks and moxfield to find and store them.
- Have fun! I love the process of looking for cards and building decks even if I do not have them in person.
- Use tabletop simulator or another online platforms to play online. This way you do not have to fork out loads of money for decks. You can simply try the ones your interested in a few times before making the decision. Also easier to play with people from the comfort of your room :)
My fav built decks
- All green tree deck- Commander: Kodama of the east tree which is a level 3 deck. This decks theme is based around nature and trees because I love the magic card designs in this style. I also just love anything nature :D The main idea around this deck is mana ramp with the addition of playing lots of extra creatures through the commanders ability.
- Red, white and black deck- Commander: Kaalia the Vast which is a level 3 deck too. I love kaalia, she is such a boss and powerful with the ability when attacking to play another creature simultaneously for free and attacking too! The key to her is putting angels, demons and dragons as your creatures so you can make the most of her ability.
I have other decks too but I have not played them enough to talk about them and I want to give the best advice I can.
Thanks guys, this is a hobby I hope to keep up and I hope I inspired you to try something new :) Lucy xoxoxo
